Leading blank lines in codeblocks ignored?

(In the following I  write <tab> because my MUA strips tabs)

Consider the code:

<tab>
<tab> Line
<tab>

or even:

Paragraph

<tab><space>
<tab> Line
<tab>
----


Markdown.pl ignores the leading blank line in the code block.
Is this intended behaviour?
