Thanks Jerry. As an old Radford boy, I would loved to have seen these in
Radford - or a photo thereof.

Subject: RE: 115/116 on 41/42

Earlier in the year I posted some info on post-merger VGN 115 and 116 being
used on N&W trains 41 and 42 for a few weeks during December of 1958. I
have since been able to get a copy of a pic of this unusual combo to post
for others to see. These units were used on the second section of these
trains for a few weeks during the heavy business of the Christmas season.
The pic shows ex VGN H16-44 No. 116 on train 41 in Bristol. For those
unfamiliar with Bristol this unit is sitting westbound in front of the
station, with the TN state line being only a couple of hundred feet (if that
much) in front of the loco.

My friend Bob McCracken on Bristol gets full credit for both the info as
well as the picture, it is one of many pictures he took in and around
Bristol over the years. The following is an excerpt from an email he sent
me to expand on the operation of this train.

"The units would arrive in Bristol as the second section of 41 and would
remain at the passenger station until departing back east as 1st 42 if I
remember correctly around 3:00 PM. The entire train, usually the loco and
three cars were turned on the wye by the yard crew. Oddly enough the engine
was shut down during the layover and had to be fired up by the outbound
crew."

Does anyone else know of these units being used on regularly scheduled N&W
passenger trains elsewhere?

In case the pic does not show up as an attachment, I will post it to the
groups photo section.
