Clare,

It is unlikely there were wyes at the ends of the spurs/branches. There certainly could have been, and it would depend upon the level of traffic and space. I have seen steam era videos where the locomotives simply backed down the branches to the main. There may have been a wye where the branch met the main at some of these locations.

Of course with diesels, it really wouldn't matter.

You may want to obtain some track charts of the area you are intersted in.
