Covered Hoppers

Some of the smaller covered hoppers were stenciled "When empty,
return to New Jersey Zinc Co., Austinville, Va."  Though some
covered hoppers hauled limestone from Austinville and Buchanan,
it was also shipped in box cars.  After the '64 merger, N&W
took many 40 ft. boxes and converted them to limestone service.
Once loaded with that powdery stuff, they're not fit for any other
commodity.  To reduce shoppings, N&W even took the doors  off.
 
About Mr. Brosnan's "Big John" covered hoppers -- when it came
time to place another order, Brosnan claimed that some of the
"Big John's" were making ten revenue trips per month.  Some were  -
by hauling them on passenger trains.  There was a regular  movement
of grain from Barber, NC to White Lilly at Knocksville, Tennessee.
Westbound, No. 27 - The Carolina Special - would  pick them up at Barber.
Leaving Asheville, NC on August 2, 1964, No. 27 had Engs 4138-4136
an RPO, three baggage-express cars, three coaches, Sou Emory  River,
the diner, and Sou 8137-8450-8832-8219-8502 - grain for Lilly.   The
two EMD's were rated at 2300 tons Leadvale to New Line.  The "F"  units
were hauling jam-up tonnage to prove Mr. Brosnan's claim.
