Ben,

I worked the RB-3,BR-2 as the head brakeman off and on during the late 70's and early 80's and was the rear brakeman then conductor on the Marion Turn for awhile. Also was the engineer on the V-37/38 for a few years in the late 80's and early 90's. I was the engineer on the year long work train when NS upgraded the Bristol line. When I left the NS in 1997 I was engineer on the Roanoke - Bristol pool out of Roanoke. Lots of good times on the V37, the "shifter" as we called it. Since we reported out of Radford, we were away from the eyes of Roanoke and during Christmas time the conductor and I would put a huge wreath on the front end of the locomotive which was ok since we kept the engine for a week or more. Also we would hang a smaller wreath on the rear of the cab. We would also bring O. Winston Link's famous Christmas eve recording at Rural Retreat and stop the shifter at the station in the late evening, get out on the roadbed and turn on the tape player up full blast and recreate that night, at least in our minds! It was a special recording, since the agent Mr. James L. Akers who was on duty that night was my great uncle. Have been a lot of places on the railroad with Amtrak however the Bristol line still holds the "favorite" on my list as the best railroad to run on. Good running, beautiful scenery and good folks, just wish the state would put passenger rail back over there.

Hey Chuck! Were you working the Bristol line local back in the early 1990's?

Thanks,

We are using Outlook Express with dial-up. We do not have the option of previewing mail before it is downloaded for us to see. This in turn clogs up the entire mail program for us. Please don't send pictures with the posts but link them to another page where we have the option to look at the pictures.

The subject and pictures should be on a railfan NS mailing list, not this list that mainly deals with historic and contemporary items of the N&W and VGN railroads.

Being a 30 + year employee of the old N&W and now with Amtrak I see idiots everyday that try to kill themselves and their families by making stupid decisions when crossing or walking near the railroad.

Yeah, but you don't have the option of not downloading them.
That's a great deal different than not opening them!

Let's be fair to Jerry. This is an exact quote from his first e-mail:

"I took several pictures of the collision that I am going to send, but in deference to those with dial up, I am going to send them in separate emails. These photos are not 56k friendly, so you have the option of opening them up if you choose." (emphasis mine)

I read my e-mail in reverse order, latest first, and I suspect that may be what "bit" some folks. But, Jerry did alert us.
