SD40 Article in Arrow

All;

I guess that I figured most everyone would understand that the "triple clasp
truck" has three sets of clasp brakes per side frame. With that design, a
single brake cylinder is needed to actuate the brake pads via the
appropriate mechanism. The NS Locomotive Equipment Guide (from NS) does call
this brake system a "clasp" system, as opposed to a single-shoe system,
which would be found on the former Southern SD40-2's.

The use of the term triple clasp brake was not intended to infer that the
brake rigging had three brake shoes per wheel.

Regards,
Russ Goodwin
