N&W equipped all the Js, all the As and all 100 Y5/6s with 24RL with pressure maintaining. At the same time, they equipped 35,000 hoppers with a new 4-position retaining valve (the new position was Slow Direct Release). The aim was to eliminate stops at the bottoms of the mountains to turn retainers down.

Subject: Use of 24-RL Brake on Steam ?

The 24-RL brake was developed in the early 1950s for those Diesel-thingies, but wasn't it applied to some N&W steam? Perhaps the passenger engines?

Or did the N&W stick with No. 6 and No. 8 brake equipment for all steam?
