Mr. Smoot: NS used to run coal empties back over the Peavine from mid-west
coal fired utility plants with one locomotive. The trains were usually
80-90 empties pulled by one Dash 40 C or C39-8. The trains ran as 883, 885
or 887 back to Williamson WV. I don't think that NS has that coal business
anymore. NS 287 runs empty auto racks through Cincinnati with one unit.

At 6:15pm I happened to be at Cambria (Christiansburg) as a freight went
east. The lone engine was 9622 and was pulling 46 auto racks. It crested the
eastbound grade at about 15mph. This is the first time in lots of train
watching at Christiansburg that I have seen a train (other than the local
freight or work trains) with one engine.

Has anyone else seen through freights in the mountains with one engine?
