I will need to research this some and get back to you. I think I can answer most of your questions.

Mr. Jeffries (or anyone else who may know),

Were the ex-B&LE tenders placed in service on the N&W unchanged from the way that they were received from B&LE or did they receive modifications? If changed, what modifications were made?

Also, while on the subject of foreign road tenders, did all of the ex-C&O/Pere Marquette tenders get placed behind N&W K1 engines, or did any other locomotives receive these as well?

What tenders did the K1 engines have that were converted to oil burners?

Lastly, did any of the K1 engines keep their N&W designed tenders for their entire service lives?

Sincerest thanks,

Brent Greer

Sam,

I have been unable to verify this, but I believe these tenders came from 2-10-4's not used by the DM&IR. I have attempted to find a B&LE roster to get the engine numbers bought by the Missabe, but haven't found one yet. What I do know is the N&W tenders came from B&LE locomotives 601, 602, 606, 607, 609, 612, 613, 615 and 616. Of the forty-some B&LE 2-10-4's, I seem to remember that about 18 went to the DM&IR.

Maybe one of mailing list members has this information.

Bud,

Did any of those tenders go to the DM&IR from the B&LE and then to the N&W, or were those different locomotives?

In 1953-54, the N&W purchased secondhand nine 22000-gallon tenders that had been used by the Bessemer & Lake Erie on its 2-10-4s. Of the nine the N&W got, one was applied to a K1 and the other eight to Y3a's. The 2061 had tender number 220304 which it received in January 1954 at the Roanoke Shops.

In the new issue of the Arrow, at the top of page 10, there is a photograph of Y3a #2061 leading a coal train.

The tender of this locomotive has a very different look to it, compared to other N&W tenders I am familiar with and have photographs of (for comparison, just look at the one behind Y3a #2070 at the end of the train in the lower picture of that same page)

Can someone please identify the tender in use behind #2061 in the upper photograph and perhaps supply some history as to its origins?

Sincere thanks for any and all responses.
