As additional info, in 1907 the Jamestown Exposition was held at Sewells Point in Norfolk, VA (not Jamestown as would be expected) to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the first permanent English settlement in this country, and the N & W produced a 17-page Jamestown Exposition handbook, a copy of which is in the NWHS archives. The handbook was designed to attract passenger traffic over the N & W to the exposition, and it contained several maps. One of these maps is attached, and it shows that the rail line to the exposition is labeled "Norfolk and Western Ry. to Exposition Grounds." But, the interesting part is that the rail line is also labeled in two places, but in smaller print, "Tidewater Ry."

Because the exposition opened at noon April 26, 1907, and the N & W would have produced the promotional handbook considerably in advance of that date, the Tidewater Ry. must have completed the line to Sewells Point under the Tidewater name by early 1907. According to H. Reid's book on the Virginian Railway, the Tidewater name was changed to Virginian on March 8 of that year.

Why were the operations of the Tidewater terminals split off to the Virginian Terminal Railway Company?

In march of 1907 the Tidewater Rwy didn't have terminals in Norfolk, other than a station (?) (maybe) for their Passenger service? The Terminal Rwy was created to construct and run those terminals.

I think the writer took some liberties. OR he didn't really know what he was talking about. (A reporter - not knowing. unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The Terminal Rwy Co consisted of two parts. First and foremost was the Sewalls Point Piers. Trackage from MP 2.3, the yard and the Piers were constructed and "owned" by the Terminal Rwy, which was owned by the Virginian. Later the Terminal Rwy got involved with the building and operations of the Union Terminal in downtown Norfolk.
