100 Years Ago In The Railway Age

(Railway Age Magazine, July 2007)

It is made unlawful for any railway after January 1, 1908, to operate a locomotive which is not equipped with air brake appliances, or any locomotive tender or car which shall not be equipped with hand holds, grab irons, and automatic couplers, or any locomotive tender or car which is not equipped with standard drawbars. The standard height of drawbars on standard gauge roads is made 34-1/2 inches and upon narrow gauge roads, 26 inches. It will be unlawful after the date mentioned for any railway to operate a train which shall not have at least 75 per cent of its cars equipped with air or power brakes. Any railway which has equipped its locomotive and cars as required is authorized to refuse equipment of connection lines which have not done so.
