Is there a chart available somewhere on the Society website that lists the Locomotive Class and shows the wheel arrangement? I am new to all of this and do not recognize the locomotives by class number.

I can only tell about Bluefield, but it was first hand observation. >From 1946 (probably earlier, but this was my first awareness) they used Z1a's to switch coal cars in the middle and east yard - mostly pushing them through the scales. The passenger station was switched by W2's. This lasted until 1951 when the first five S1a's were assigned to Bluefield, replacing both the W2's and the Z1a's. Later on, the S1a's were supplemented by Y3's and at least one Y5 (see page 86 of my N&W In Color, Vol. 1. Hope this helps. Jim Nichols

I am interested in what type of locomotives were used for yard duties (switching, etc.) at Bluefield, Eckman, and Northfork (Byrd?) in different time periods. Did they just use their reserve mainline power or did they have dedicated switchers?
Thanks for any help,
