The B&O RR HS visited the bridge as part of their Staunton convention a
couple of years back. I can send some pictures off-list to those
interested.

The Pennsylvania Railroad had very little influence on the race down the
Shenandoah valley to join with the AM&O. Frederick Kimball and the
E.W. Clark firm were able to attract enough investors to support their
winning bid for the AM&O and push construction of the Shenandoah
Valley Railroad to the junction of Big Lick (later renamed
Roanoke.)

The B&O-backed Valley Railroad was completed and operated as far as
Lexington. The stone bridge beside I-81 just south of Staunton and other
visible grades and structures between there and Lexington were operated
by the B&O. It appears that much of the land along that route
reverted to the surrounding landowners.

Evidence of grading for the Valley Railroad between Lexington and Salem,
VA is detailed in John Hildebrand's "Iron Horses in the
Valley", but no rails were ever laid on this portion of the
line.

Civil War General Robert E. Lee who resided in Lexington after the war
was associated with the Valley Railroad.

The B&O railroad was aiming for Salem but the Pennsy backed the
Shenandoah Railway and B&O couldn't compete (as usual).
