I expect the ending of the steam facilities in Monore was extended beyond
other places on the Southern because of N&W's steam engines coming and going on
the three joint Southern-N&W passenger trains.

Until 1953 or so, there were four J-powered trains that went
to Monroe. Passenger trains ? Well not exactly. Nos. 9 + 10
were primarily mail and express trains, but they did provide
passenger service as far as Kemper Street Station, Lynchburg.
Passengers vacated the coach there. No. 10 became Southern's
No. 142 at Montview and ran through to D.C. No. 141 from D.C.
became N&W's No. 9 at Montview. Passenger service on
Nos. 9 and 10 was cut back to Bristol-Roanoke in the mid-50's.
Since these were intrastate trains only, N&W applied to the
State Commerce Commission and they were cancelled
. . . . .for lack of passenger patronage.

N&W's engines probably weren't coaled at Monroe . . .
N&W didn't want to pay Southern's price. In the cycle of
J's, No. 18 would stop at Vicker for coal, and go to Monroe,
before returning to Shaffers Crossing for service. The J
assigned to No. 10 out of Bristol would coal at Vicker,
because at Roanoke, it would protect No. 3 Roanoke to
Cincinnati with only an hour, twenty-five minute layover ..
provided that No. 10 was on time.
