Question About Norfolk Area

If and when the new port facility that is proposed for Craney Island comes
to pass it will be serviced by the Commonwealth Railway. The track for
Craney Island would come around the Coast Guard base and tie into the track
that is being built in the median of the Western Freeway.

As for the connections - both the NS and CSX have or will have connections
to the Commonwealth. The NS connection permits trains put together in the
Commonwealth's marshaling yard to leave the yard and travel west without
stopping. The plans are to have the Commonwealth make up the train with NS
motive power and the NS crew will take it out of the yard and head west. It
is my understanding that this may start as soon as November 12. How the
CSX connection, still under construction, will work is still up in the air.
Word is that Commonwealth will take cars destined for CSX to Kilby and leave
them there. They will also pick up any thing that came in on CSX at the
same time.

When talking about the various facilities that have existed in Portsmouth
don't forget the NY, P & N which had a car float facility in Port Norfolk.
There is a concrete plant on the site now. It was located at the
intersection of Bayview Blvd. and Chautauqua Ave.

One last comment, when the Norfolk Naval Shipyard was named it was located
in Norfolk County. What was then Norfolk County is now parts of Portsmouth
and Chesapeake.

Have a nice day - it's much better than a bad one!
