Frank: I think the Frisco connestion has been
debunked. It is an original Wabash car acquired by N&W
in the 1964 merger. It is listed in the 1965 & 1966
Official Registers (as still lettered Wabash on those
dates)

Subject: Re: N&W 160

After seeing the evidence, and the two pictures side
by side, I am convinced that N&W 160 is not a former
Frisco car. The source who provided that Frisco to
N&W information had no further documentation, and was
similarly persuaded by the evidence at hand. Today,
Mike Condren, webmaster for the Memphis Railroad
Historical Pages, advised that he had photos of the
"suspect" Frisco cars in storage in Newburg, MO, taken
9-30-1967, providing further validation that the cars
didn't go to N&W.

My apologies for passing along an inquiry based on
faulty information, but at the time, it all seemed
possible, if not totally plausible. The response
yesterday on Frisco.org provided detailed information
on when the Frisco postal cars were converted to M/W
service, and their subsequent numbers, so I think we
can forget about the N&W connection.

I am still most interested in learning whether the
60-foot compartment cars ran on the Birm & Mem until
that line was discontinued.

Thanks to everyone for their input in tracking down
these details to get the correct story, even though
the end result wasn't quite the exotic transaction
first imagined.

Thanks, Jim and Bill:

This has been a very interesting discussion. It's
also one that has been very helpful since I didn't
mention these cars in the N&W Railway Post Offices
monograph I prepared last year. Do either of you know
the entire car series that was transferred from the
Wabash to the N&W roster as well as the class? The
Nickle Plate also had a few RPOs, mostly less than 60
feet. Most branchline RPOs were discontinued by the
time of the N&W-NKP-WAB merger, so I suppose that none
of the former NKP RPO equipment was ever
relettered/renumbered for the N&W?

Good morning,
