Working Time Cut in Roanoke Shops
------
Roanoke, Va., July 29 -- The third reduction in working time in the shops was announced today. A notice was posted announcing that there would be no work done on Saturdays until further notice. Up to six weeks ago the shops worked ten hours per day. Then came nine hours, then eight, and now it is five days of eight hours each.
As has been previously stated this is done on account of the falling off of freight business, especially shipment of coal. Nearly all the coal mines in the fields are working on reduced time.
Of all the furnaces of the Virginian Coal, coke and Iron Co., only one is now working.
The announcement of a cut of one day in the time of the shops was no surprise to the men as it is well known that on many roads the men are working only two of [sic] three days per week.
Just as soon as business improves the shops will be working on full time and according to President Johnson's opinion good times will come in the fall.
