RESUME WORK ON S. & W. R'Y.
Bristol, Va., Dec. 18 - It is reported here on good authority that
construction work on the South and Western and Holston River
Railroads, which was largely abandoned at the inception of the recent
financial depression, will be resume shortly after the first of the year.
The South and Western is being constructed by a New York
syndicate, composed of Thomas F. Ryan, T. J. Coolidge, Norman B.
Ream, and others, headed by George L. Carter, of this city, at a cost
of $50,000,000. It extends from the eastern Kentucky and Southwest
Virginia coal fields, through East Tennessee, Western North Carolina,
and South Carolina to the coast, and is being built for the
development of a 300,000 acre tract of coal land, owned by the
Clinchfield Coal Company, a Carter-Ryan concern, capitalized at
$40,000,000. The Holston River Railroad is being built through East
Tennessee into the Southwest Virginia coal fields by the Virginia and
Southwestern and Black Mountain system, both of which are owned by
the Southern.
Construction work on the Kingsport and Bristol, a new railroad to
be built from this city to Kingsport, at a junction with the South
and Western and Holston River, and headed also by the Carter
interests, will begin January 1st. Contracts are now being let for the work.
