"Ted:

Referring to your Question #5-

In the 20's N&W had a freight operating Roanoke to
Winston-Salem known as The Camel. probably because
R. J. Reynolds was one of the railroad's larger customers.
The first TOFC (Trailer on Flat Car) dedicated trains were
Apollo 1 (westbound Buffalo-Chgo) and Apollo 2 (eastbound).

Harry

I believe the Camel Special ran from Winston-Salem to Roanoke.
According to TT #34 it left North Winston at 12:45am as train
no. 84. In the same TT train no. 86 which left North Winston
at 4:35pm was named The Torch Light. The Southern also had a
named train the Prince Albert Special which left Winston-Salem
at 2:00pm and made connections at Barber for Louisville, Cincinnati
, Memphis & New Orleans.
