The attached picture of VGN EL-3A No. 100 is one of a dozen VGN electric locomotive images on a CD produced by the Electric Railroaders' Association of New York containing images from the ERA's Sprague Library.

This is an unusually clear view of some of the undercab equipment, including what appears to be a coupler centering device. Does anyone know how this device worked? Did a pair of springs keep an unmated coupler centered at all times, even when attempting to couple on a curve, or was there some power device to angle the coupler to line up with an intended mating coupler on a curve?
