Railroad Lanterns

Guys: Split color globes are the most desired by lantern collectors as they
are the most rare type. Usually they are fairly old, 1880's to 1920's and
fit mostly the smaller 'presentation' style of lantern (kinda mostly used by
passenger conductors). Red-over-clear and green-over-clear are the more
common combinations. Older globes can have the colored glass cast over the
clear; later versions have the two colors fused together in the middle of
the globe.

These dual color globes have been reproduced in the 1960's and 1970's as
replicas because old, original globes will sell for around $600-1400
depending on condition and possible markings/engraving. The replica
versions are worth much less.

Ken,

I've seen them at the Gaithersburg, MD Railroadiana show. I think it was

industry wide. An old car knocker I worked with told me about them. If my
recollections are correct I think they were split horizontally, with the
green on the bottom.
