The wreck was caused by deliberate tampering of the switch and signals
preventing the crew from determining that their route was incorrect. Engine
133 turned over killing the engineer and the fireman (I think). (I have the
ICC accident report somewhere but it should be available on the ICC
website).

Jimmy Thompson was convicted in Ironton Ohio Common Pleas Court in 1935 of
First Degree Murder and sentenced to death. Frank Smith was convicted of
conspiracy to commit First Degree Murder and sentenced to life without
parole.

My photos show 133 on its side with the cab torn off and the tender well
smashed. While there were injuries among the passengers, no cars turned
over and there were no fatalities among them.

Thompson and Smith were found to have attempted a derailment at this
location a few times before April 20th, but track walkers and signal
maintainers located any trouble prior to any train movements.

Subject: looking for Pocahontas passenger line info

Good evening,

I'm new to the list and am searching for information on my
great-grandfather, John Henry Myers. He was the engineman on the Pocahontas
which derailed April 21 1932 in Union, Ohio resulting in his death. Any help
would be great. Thanks

Ed Meyers
