Gary, did you mean the ?ACL ?R-1 4-8-4's built by Baldwin that had severe counterbalancing problems?? I don't recall any of the RF&P classes of 4-8-4's (never referred to as Northerns - they were Generals, Governors and Statesmen from Virginia) having such problems. ????

?
I won't say that they never exceeded the posted limit, but?1943 RF&P timetables show
the maximum authorized speed?for passenger ?trains was but 70 MPH.? ?In addition to
poor counterbalancing of the R-1s, ACL's main?track was laid in 100# rail, most rolled
by Southern Coal & Iron in the 1920's.? There was many a fissure in Southern
rail.??ACL mounted cameras on the R-1s and filmed? the drivers pounding the rail.
John Rehor, N&W Safety Agent, once noted that every railroad specialized in it's
own method of disaster.? On the NKP, it was rear-enders.??On the ACL, it most certainly
would have been broken rail.??? Poor counterbalancing and Southern rail led to many
?a fatality on?ACL - 73? dead near Pembroke, NC initially caused by a broken rail, but
resulting in a side collision because the fireman failed to flag? traffic? on the adjacent track.
