IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
Struck by Mail Bag
The telegraph operator at Oakvale on the Norfolk and Western was struck Friday night by a mail bag thrown from east bound passenger train No. 16, and for a time it was thought that he was seriously injured. He was shaken up and shocked, but recovered in a short time with nothing more serious than having the breath knocked out of him. He got his breath back, however.
------
[The exchange of mail "on the fly" at stations was not without hazards as this article shows, as well as precious articles about enginemen being struck and killed by mail cranes. Based on a 1915 schedule No. 16 would have passed through Oakvale close to 10:00 PM--after nightfall in August.]
