Don't forget this was a big reason for the Shenandoah Valley RR. The valley that runs from just west of Buena Vista up through Riverside, Cornwall, Midvale, Vesuvious & Pkin was at one time known as "The Iron Valley".

As for why they ceased? I somehow think that Missabe may have had a big effect with its richer ore.
