As added info, Whitethrorn pushers using the cut-on-the-fly device go into emergeny when they cut away from the train. The fly device only closes the angle cock on the cars.

When I retired, the locomotive people were designing the device.  They called it
"the knuckle chucker and air hose sucker."  Seems like it's a safe play to
let the pusher go into emergency and squat rather than risk a "run-in".
