Does anyone have history of N&W police during and after the merger with the
ickel Plate RR in the early 1960's?
Paul Bredwell
aul:
Somehow I forgot to tell you about Raymond M. Gillespie. Never
knew him, but his brother was a yardmaster and trainmaster at
St. Louis. He was a Wabash man and after the merger he became
Chief Special Agent in Roanoke. When Mr. Fishwick took over, he
put a stop to frivilous travel by establishing a travel burean
(two men). So if you had to attend a symposium in Syracuse or a
seminar in Seattle, you submitted a travel request and the travel
bureau made arrangements -- no more 1st class air travel, no five
star hotels. No one suffered. One practice of the travel bureau
was to route N&W travelers to the midwest via N&W No.3 to Cincinnati,
where they taxied to the airport for Chicago, St. Louis, etc.
Gillespie was en route to Chicago. On arrival at the airport,
he found he could catch an earlier flight and changed his reser-
vation. The plane he was on went down near Indianapolis.
