Ed and all,

I was interested in the photos of the about to be felled N&W cpl signals and also the replacement masts standing behind them. They seem very high up from track level. Here in the UK the move has been to lower signals during replacement so that they are as close as possible to the engineer's eye level. This also makes it safer for when signal maintainers have to climb the masts for repair or maintenance. Does anyone know why the signals are at such a height?

Kind regards to you all,

Miceal

As the CPL's are being replaced, there are modifications being made regarding the placement of
the signals. N&W's Rule 337 read- "Signals are located over or at the right of the track they govern,
unless otherwise provided." For the sake of squeezing a nickel, NS now uses one mast to
support signals governing both directions and it means that one of the signals is to the left
of the track it governs, The new signals appear to be positioned closer to eye-level.

Abe - on the Shenandoah Div. and on the Radford-Bristol portion of the Radford Div., the mast
governing the signal for the siding was significantly lower than the mast for the main line
signal - - - - except at Wysor. Why ? Harry Bundy
