IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
Extending Railway Line
It was reported in this city yesterday that the New River, Holston and Western Railway was extending its line from Rocky Gap to Hixville in Bland county, and that the engineers were busy putting in stakes and getting ready for the actual beginning of work. From another source it is stated that it is likely that some time will yet elapse before grading will begin, as the preliminary arrangements ad not been completed.
[The NR,H&W became the Narrows branch of the N&W June 1, 1919.]
------
Car Repairer Badly Hurt
Shelby Thompson, a car repairer, twenty-two years of age and a resident of this city and employed by the Norfolk and Western railroad, was struck by passenger train No. 18 yesterday morning on the west end yard and received some serious but not fatal injuries. He received several bruises about the body in addition to a cut on the head. Hearing the train approaching as he was walking along the track he stepped to another track to avoid it, but the engine struck him unawares. The injured man was brought to the city on the train that struck him and taken to the Bluefield Sanitarium where his injuries received attention, and last night he was resting comfortably.
