The Library of Congress has up on its Railroad Maps website an interesting 1881 map titled "Map Showing Lines and Connections of the Shenandoah Valley and Norfolk & Western Railways," published 1881. It carries a legend of the stations, counties and elevations of both railroads (the SV data running only as far south as Waynesboro.)

There are several ways to get to this map:

1.) Enter this impossibly long string into your browser (which you will have to cut-and-paste very carefully):

http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/map_item.pl?data=/home/www/data/gmd/gmd370/g3701/g3701p/rr005590.jp2&style=rrmap&itemLink=D?gmd:6:./temp/~ammem_iHkC::&title=Map%20showing%20lines%20and%20connections%20of%20the%20Shenandoah%20Valley%20and%20Norfolk%20%26%20Western%20Railways.

2.) Go to the website :

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/rrmapquery.html

... then in the search field enter the word Norfolk

... then select the third item in the list, "United States, 1881"

3.) If you can't jump through all these hoops, send me a wire and ask me to email you the file (if your email can support an 11 meg file.) My telegraph address is : pravoslavna2 _at_ yahoo _dot_ com
