I am familiar with the nine cars (three PRR, three RF&P, three N&W) that made up the pool for New York - Norfolk 10-6 sleepers, but they were all in the PRR paint scheme. Did RF&P sometimes contribute other sleepers in the blue/gray scheme for this service? Did RF&P coaches run through?

I doubt RF&P coaches ran through. Coach passengers were required to transfer trains at Richmond. You probably already know, but RF&P contributed King George, King William, and King & Queen to the New York-Norfolk pool and one of the three protected a New York-Richmond assignment.

Sometime between June 7, 1953 and August 4, 1954, the Cavalier and the Cannonball were
consolidated between Norfolk and Petersburg. Train Nos. 21 and 22 (the Cannonballs) became
the surviving train. The Cannonball's crew and a "K" class equipped with GRS train stop (for
operation over the ACL) were assigned between Norfolk and Broad Street-Richmond. Home
terminal for the crew of the Cavalier was Petersburg. They'd depart Petersburg at 10:30 PM,
travel 48 mi. to Crewe, layover there for about 4 hours and catch No. 16 back to Petersburg,
arriving at 6:00 AM Harry Bundy
