I agree that Signal Engineering is a complicated subject. There are many variables. The era you are modeling, the type of territory (dark, APB, TC), and which tracks on the layout are to be signaled and which tracks not signaled would all have to be known before a signal plan could be designed. The main track itself is pretty straight forward, but the purpose of each auxiliary track would have to be known. If the auxiliary track is to used to meet trains, the length of the track and whether it is to be signaled or not could result in several different signal configurations as Joe Shaw pointed out. I am not sure that every feature of the prototype can be modeled. A hold out signal in TC territory might be an example as well as all the complexities of prototype interlocking circuits.
