Driver Quartering ?

My understanding is the same as yours; also, that "right side lead" was by
far the most common. I have no idea why. Theoretically, it shouldn't
matter, should it?

This would lead to the suspicion that the ex-PRR K-3s that became the N&W
E-3s would have been left hand lead, but that's speculation only.
