Last steam days on The Arrow

NW Mailing List nw-mailing-list at nwhs.org
Wed Apr 9 20:50:31 EDT 2014

According to my records, the last regular run of steam power on No. 26, the
eastbound Powhatan Arrow on the Cincinnati District was on July 19, 1958
with Class J 603. I made a movie of it arriving Portsmouth, along with
another movie as it left for Williamson with Class K-2 118.

However, there is a a little more to the story.

On the morning of July 19, No. 3 had K-2 118 from Williamson to Portsmouth
and Class J 613 from Portsmouth to Cincinnati for the last regular run for
steam on that train.

On July 20, No. 26 was double-headed from Cincinnati to Portsmouth with
(leased RF&P) diesels 1014-1015 and Class J 613, thus making the 613 the
last J out of CUT in regular service.

At various times during the next several months J's were occasionally run
light on the Cincinnati District to protect No. 4 or No. 26 when No. 25 or
No. 3 (with the outbound power for those trains) was excessively late.

HOWEVER, in response to another recent reference to alleged "joyriding"
with the J's on the Cincinnati District, I can state with certainty that no
such events took place.
