Last night I had the pleasure of "Takin' Twenty" with nine of the Brethren
and Friends of the Virginian Railway. Retired Norfolk Southern Supervisor
Ed Noell and his wife joined us. Ed brought the Brethren copies of the
Virginia Citizens Defense League "Defending Your Right to Defend Yourself"
which outlines places where Virginians can carry a concealed weapon in our
state. The Noells were eating near by recently and overheard the Brethren
discussing the conceal carry law and since he is active in the VCDL, he
offered his assistance. Thanks Ed.

For Show and Tell I took the two photos I recently posted on this site of
the 611 train leaving on time last Sunday morning and heading to Spencer
for this week end's activities there, and 611's "rebirth" back into steam
operation. The Brethren especially enjoyed the one showing 611 going
through "downtown" Hardy, VA on the old VA. We also discussed last
Saturday's sendoff for the 611 at the Virginia Museum of Transportation,
and I was able to give them several items handed out last Saturday. Each
got one of the now famous "611 fan" fans". This hand operated device came
in handy on Saturday in the heat to also wave goodbye to the old "J". Also
given out were NS refrigerator magnets from "National Train Day" and an
outstanding sheet from the N&W (and VGN) Historical Society with a drawing
of the 611 on one side and fact sheet about her on the other.

>From last week, Robin Shavers of Richmond, VA is the winner of the N&W-VGN
" Building to a Vision" pin for identifying the structure needed to cross
to get to the Darling cabin as: the "Robert E. Lee natural bridge". This
week's question for another pin is: What is Otis, the town drunk's, day
job? Send your answer along with your snail mail address to
gkholine at cox.net.

I received many questions and comments from last week about the
Tidewater-Deepwater map with various name differences. Anne and H. B.
Bryant who replied "Aidyl (Lydia spelled backwards) is now their home town
of Sedley, VA. Doug Bess says Silver Gap is near Oak Hill Junction and Big
Stony is Norcross, VA. Bruce Harper also replied about Big Stony being
near Ripplemead and the Pott's Creek connection. He also replied that
Summitt could be the station serving the Yellow Sulpher Springs Hotel or
Shelby or Merrimac. Greg Harrod told us that Tinklling is now Kenbidge.
We have made plans to display this map and other such in the Station for
the upcoming June N&W HS Convention.

The Jewel from the Past is from November 29, 2007: "Bob Rowland, VGN
Clerk, who grew up in Princeton, told of using the 'flat and straight' shop
and yard route to travel from his home on a mountain nearby, to town. He
said the five mile 'straight down and right on flat ground' method to town
was much better than a 'zig-zag' direct one'. He also recalled his
grandmother winning a contest in Princeton for wood chopping. She won a
'brand new shiny double-edged axe' in a contest that included 'grown men'."

Most of you now know that this last paragraph of my report is sometimes
"censored" by my beautiful bride of 49 years. It was quite refreshing the
other day after she watched one of her morning interview shows and handed
me several quotes from Dolly Pardon. I DID get her permission to share
them with you: When asked 'Are they real?" Dolly replied "Of Course not. I
could never grow my nails this long". "Now that you are a Doctor (honorary
Dr. PHD) what should we call you?" "Doctor Dolly or Double D". What is
your favorite color Dolly was asked. "Claral #622". And my personal
favorite: "Do you ever get tired of Dumb Blond jokes? "No, because I know
I ain't dumb and I know I ain't blond".

Time to pull the pin on this one!

Departing Now from V248,

Skip Salmon
