A couple of weeks back here is Buford, Ga, the mainline goes from double track to single track as you head north from ATL to washington DC. A NB IM came through the intermediate signal at Sugar Hill, GA (Piedmont Div. ~MP602) at track speed and called the signal clear. As they creted the hill at Walters approaching the NB Signal at MP599.8, it had turned red against them, as was the turnout. Since yhey were only 0.2 miles from the signal when they saw it the crew obviously ran the signal and the turnout. Track speed for IM trains is 50+ mph through the area.

A similar incident happened on the Pittsburgh Division in
October, 1970. The local to Brewster, OH had picked up
the Erie interchange and was headed for home. The
home signal for the Creston siding displayed "clear", but
as the local approached, it dropped to "stop". In that era,
AJ-1 was the symbol from the WMd connection at
Connellsville to Toledo. Apparently, the time it took to
work Creston was more than the dispatcher had estimated.
AJ-1 was closing and the dispatcher took the signal
up to advance it to Creston. The local stopped prior
to passing the signal, then after the "time out" feature
wound down, the local took siding. Had the local been
too close to watch the signal drop, I suppose the signal
at the east end would have displayed "stop". Kinda like
running a Lionel. Harry Bundy
