Hello,
Thete is apparently still what is left of a Water Tank in the vicinity
of the remains of the Roundhouse in Bristol. I've attached a aerial shot in
this email. I enjoy the emails, thanks,
   Matthew in the Bluegrass State.

Vance was just west of that new electronics plant a couple of miles below
the Weaver Pike underpass. It was about at the foot of the hump between
there and Bluff City.

Southern steam engines were serviced at the N&W roundhouse. There was a
water tank west of the roundhouse used for both roads. Southern
locomotives could be seen in the roundhouse next to N&W locomotives.

It was a busy place during WWII. Southern 2-10-2s were rated at 1600 tons
west of Bristol while N&W Y-6s were rated at 3100 east.

Ed,

Appreciate your response. Which leads to two additional questions: Where
was Vance Siding? And, did the post-war SR steam locomotives take on water
at the NW tank or had Southern into Bristol gone totally diesel by then?

As far as I know, the name Vance’s Tank was an old name; there may have
been a tank there at one time but there was none in the post war era.

The siding’s official name was “Vance”.

Question to Ed King: Where on Vance Tank Road was the water tank located in
Bristol, TN? The Bristol, Virginia tank I am familiar with as it still
exists near the roundhouse segment.

Thanks,

Mike Pierry, Jr.
