Mr. Ponton and Mr. Nichols, thank you very much for your replies, now I know I'm not crazy...yet! Now if someone can give us the "rest of the story". Why did 2194 have the larger front sand dome? Perhaps Louis Newton knows the history? -Ed Burnett

Checkout photo NW06200 in the archives. 2194 definitely has an oversize front sand dome as of 4/57.

I watched the DVD mentioned and noticed plainly that the front sand box on 2194 was much larger and contained four access covers instead of two.

To be more specific: watch the DVD "Vintage Steam of the Norfolk & Western" produced by Railroad Video Productions 2015. At least 2/3 of the way through the film there is footage taken at Bluefield in the late 1950s, during this footage Y6b 2194 is seen EB through the yard with a freight, she appears to be missing her front number plate and her large forward sand dome can be clearly seen. The vantage point is from above and the view of the top of the boiler is very clear. The forward sand dome has four fill hatches. There are lots of other Y6bs in this sequence, wait for the 2194. I have watched it 4 times to be sure I haven't made a mistake!
After seeing this, I happened upon a photo of Y6b 2192 in the NWHS Arrow Vol 18 No. 3 May/June 2002, page 2. Its a front 3/4 shot but the front dome appears to be oversized just like the one 2194 sports in the DVD. Pretty curious!
