I have just been reading an article (Railroad Gazette vol 9, 1877) by R.H. Soule on the special railroad arrangements which were made to handle passenger traffic at the nation's Centennial Exposition in 1876.

I liked the article, so decided to check up on Soule. It turns out that he was Superintendent of Motive Power on the N&W in the 1890 (exact years uncertain.) He was born in 1849, graduated from Harvard in engineering, started as a draughtsman in 1875 at Altoona, and the worked as Superintendent of Motive Power on the Northern Central, the Philadelphia & Erie, the New York West Shore & Buffalo, the Pittsburgh Cincinatti & St Louis, the Erie, and the N&W, and somewhere along the line worked for Baldwin, as well. I do not know where he finished up his working career.

Does anyone know anything about Soule and his stay in Roanoke?
