The Other Ball's Hole

While you guys are pontificating over the Radford Division's "Ball's
Hole", most of you probably didn't know that there was also a "Ball's Hole"
on the Shenandoah Division. It is located between Lithia and Buchanan, Va.
The Valley's mainline has been dropping continuously from Nace, through
Spec, Fringer and Lithia. We considered "Ball's Hole to be that area
between the southbound signal at the north end of Lithia to the road
crossing at the junction of Lithia Rd. (Rte. 640) and Rte. 646 and just
north of the old southbound intermediate signal at MP H216.7. This road
crossing was where the track started uphill again creating the "Hole". The
photo shows #2 heading southbound downhill just south of the road crossing
at "Ball's Hole" with Purgatory Mt. in the background.

As an aside, just after topping the hill that is behind the train in
the photo, coming south you could see both the intermediate signal and the
signal at the north end of Lithia (now called "Ellis Run"). That was before
the trees grew too tall and before they took out the intermediate signal.
