Barneys

In several pictures of barneys from the early 1900's, (one attached from
the Archives) it appears barneys were pulled up the ramp to the rotary by a
cable, and then I assume, pulled back down.  Is this correct?  Are barneys
operated the same today or by other means than a cable?  Thanks!
