I have timetables from 1/31/37, 9/29/46, and 6/15/58 and see the following to/from New York:
1/2 (Shenandoah Valley Route):
1937 12 sec/1 DR Bluefield
1946 12 sec/1 DR and 10 sec/3 DBR Roanoke
1958 10/6 Roanoke

15/16 (Cavalier)
1937 None to/from New York
1946 10 sec/1 Compartment/1 DR Williamson (in 41/42 east of Roanoke)
1958 10/6 Williamson to/from Washington (no New York) (in 41/42 east of Roanoke)

17/18 (Birmingham Special)
1937 12 sec/1 DR both Nashville and Birmingham
1946 8 sec/5 DBR Birmingham and 12 sec/1 DR both Knoxville (17 only) and Chattanooga
1958 10/6 Birmingham to/from Washington (no New York)

21/22 (Cannon Ball)
1937 10 sec/2 Compartment/1 DR Norfolk
1946 10 sec/2 Compartment/1 DR Norfolk
1958 10/6 Norfolk (interestingly, 4’s Dining Car came off its train at Petersburg, overnighted there, and then was added to 22 in the morning for the just under two hour trip to Norfolk)

41/42 (NY, Chattanooga, and New Orleans Ltd in 1937 and 1946, Pelican in 1958)
1937 10 sec/2 DR New Orleans, 12 sec/1 DR Shreveport (others to/from Washington)
1946 10 sec/1 compartment/2 DR New Orleans, 12 sec/ 1 DR Shreveport, 10 sec/2 DR Bristol, 12 sec/1 DR Knoxville (42 only), 15/16’s through cars
1958 10/6 New Orleans and Knoxville

45/46 (Tennessean except 1937 as 25/26 Memphis Special)
1937 12 sec/1 DR Memphis and Nashville
1946 10 sec/3 DBR Memphis
1958 14 Roomette/4 DBR Memphis

With regard to the note below, this suggests that as long as 15/16 had a New York sleeper, it went via 41/42 and the Southern at Lynchburg as it was doing so in both 1946 and 1958.

I was always under the impression that the sleeper was put on a Southern train in Roanoke, so your statement that it went ACL (presumably from Petersburg) got me scurrying to my copy of "NORFOLK AND WESTERN RAILWAY COMPANY CONSIST OF ALL MAIN LINE PASSENGER TRAINS", the March 15, 1954 edition one can purchase from the NWHS Archives.

Additionally, there was through coach service between Roanoke and Harrisburg. The sleeper and through coach would be routed at Hagerstown via the Pennsylvania Railroad. In April 1952 the Pullman was 10-6 or 10-1-1 per the Guide. Routing to New York on PRR was Hagerstown, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Trenton, Newark and New York.
