Bad Day for No. 86 at Ironto (1966)

I don't remember now, but somehow I herd about the wreck. I drove to to site, about where the Bradshaw Spur diverges now. I got a few slides of the "car lot" on the south side of the river. I also heard from bystanders about the Tech students "diving" for adult beverages. Ray, I don't know if I got any pictures of your buddies, or not!
Abe, never knew you were on the crew!
Don't have the date nearby, but also saw a northbound just north of Boones Mill with cars laying in the northbound lane of Rt. 220.

Abram,

Keep the stories coming. These are terrific.

I believe several kegs (or more)  of beer from the wreck on No. 86 ended up in my fraternity house at Virginia Tech.

Everyone:  Please note the search feature on the Channel 10 news video site.  I have found a number of N&W and Southern news videos, primarily of wrecks, in the 1950s and 60s.  Some involve passenger trains.  None of the passenger wrecks were major but provide some views of equipment on the trains.  I simply typed “trains” in the search engine on the UVA website.

Fascinating! Looks like former VGN hook B-37 on the est end getting ready to 'throw out' line.

Good job, AB!

Mr. Bradd Knapp, C.E., a former railroad civil engineer, sent the attached, which links a clip of movie footage of the Ironto wreck now held in the U.Va. archives.

Remember…there is fillum: http://search.lib.virginia.edu/catalog/uva-lib:2239431 (You may have to wait for the entire clip to be loaded into buffer…don't ask me why).

The brass had bigger things on their minds, so you got away with it.  Within a week, stockholders of the N&W and C&O would approve a merger…
