Are you sure you don't mean C & O? C & O (and CSX now) ran down the Virginia
Peninsula through Newport News. Norfolk & Western was on the south side of
the James River, terminating at its namesake city.  I grew up in Newport
News.

While I was in HHC, C Company, the operating company, had numerous
encounters with the N&W which ran outside the post.
