The M2 Automatic switcher will be the subject of a future Arrow article, I just came into some photos and some technical data that will be included. The short answer is the experiment was somewhat of a success, but the inexpensive availability of the virtually new ex-C&O 0-8-0s only a few years later made the conversion too costly to be effective.
