Emergency Railroad Power

Jim King’s question about possible emergency uses for a power car reminded me of two articles I found in the Circleville Herald (Scioto Division).

Twice in a (almost exactly) ten year stretch - in August of 1942 and 1952 - the Esmeralda Canning company had boiler problems that interrupted their corn canning production in the middle of the harvest rush. It was bad enough that they had to ask farmers to slow down their picking.

In both cases, a call to the division superintendent in Portsmouth led to a locomotive being dispatched from Columbus to provide boiler steam. The articles were silent on which locomotive type was dispatched (the industry track - the old main line alignment - could support Zs and Ks).

I’m curious how often this type of service was supplied by the railroads.

Duplicates of this slide (link is below) have surfaced on ebay several times over the past couple years. What I find interesting is the single car in the train: a portable power generator converted from a boxcar. Strange that it’s being moved by itself. Suggestions as to why? Maybe an “emergency” situation somewhere?

I have attached a shot of power car 410 and I’ve seen a power car in the background of the 0-8-0 228 shot (also attached). Just curious as to if there were several of these cars and where would they have been used other than with office cars as may be the case with 410.
