Re: loss of the #800 and three crew. In the 4th printing (1980) Mr. Reid has "Goldie" as the Engineer's spouse. The photo is stunning. During my time as "Road Foreman of Engines" (i.e. a new 2LT) in the 714th TBROS&DE at Ft. Eustis, the NCO's always were on the new troops to have proper respect for the power of steam.

A brass paperweight made from a boiler wash-out plug from the 800 sits on my computer desk in front of me right now. Granddad (VGN engineer W.R. (Bill) Bloyd) retrieved the plug from the wreckage of the 800 after it was towed in to Victoria. He then gave it to one of the Victoria machine shop men and asked him to lathe-turn it into the paperweight it is now. Granddad was one of several engineers who had reported the problem (faulty injector, I believe) that ultimately led to the 800's destruction.

I haven't seen a post on this subject yet today. I bring it to your attention because I believe it worthy to remember the souls lost on this day 78 years ago on our Virginian Railway.

At approximately 5:20 am on April 1, 1941 Engineer John (Goldie) Dudding, Fireman Meade Brown and Head Brakeman Hollie Harrison lost their lives when the mammoth 800, Class AE 2-10-10-2 blew up between Stewartsville and Goodview, VA.

The story has been recalled many times, so I will not go into details now. For more details you may go to H. Reid's VIRGINIAN RAILWAY, Kalmbach Publishing, 1961, pages 92-95.
