If you're not bound to London, take the train up to York for the day and
go to the Railway Museum, it's free (donation suggested). Closer by train
from London is the Great Western Society base at Didcot. Just a walk from
the railway station at Didcot Parkway over a footbridge to a vast
collection of Great Western and Western Region of British Railways
equipment. Using the Central line of the underground one can reach the
Epping and Ongar heritage railway. Going South of London you have the
Bluebell Railway also accessible by rail. Have never spent much time in the
north as the family I have there lives in the southwest (Newton Abbot) and
Southeast (Woking) but hope that helps.
