AMTRAK #171

Since I will be traveling to Roanoke on May 1 on #171, I thought I would monitor its performance in the days prior to my trip.  While it seems to get out of DC very close to on time, by the time it gets to Roanoke it is up to an hour late. And the closer it gets to the Star City, the more it falls behind.  Any explanation for this recurrent  pattern?  Traffic, poor track, NS indifference or hostility?
