The schedule I have from 10/70 (that month’s Official Guide) has 4 and 18 as well as 3 and 17 scheduled to be in Roanoke simultaneously exchanging passengers. 18 was scheduled to arrive Roanoke at 10:55am and be there 1:35 before departing at 12:20pm. 4 arrived at 10:35am and departed at 11:10am (WB times were 3 8:10pm to 8:35pm and 17 7:25pm to 8:30pm).

It’s entirely possible (perhaps even likely) that any train 18 on 5/1/71 was just an equipment move. I could well see the N&W not wanting to carry passengers they didn’t legally have to on 5/1. Quoting Harry Bundy’s previous note that mentioned an 18 on 5/1:
> You didn't ask, but here's No. 18 for the same date:
>
> Eng 515
> Conductor Turner and Engineer Tom Angle on duty 1:00 PM
> SOU 510 - Lynchburg (Kemper Street)
> SOU 1016 - " " "
> SOU 840 - " " "
> N&W 502 - " " “

Note that it says on duty at 1:00pm. Assuming this is at Roanoke, that’s 40 minutes after 18’s scheduled departure time from Roanoke.

It had never occurred to me that another passenger train, besides No.4, may have passed through Roanoke on 5-1-71. Did it proceed or follow No.4? Ken Miller seems to remember that No.4 departed late that day. That would mean 4 left close to the scheduled departure time for 18 that Larry references below. Many photos/videos have been published of the NW Passenger Extra and 2nd No.4 of 5-1-71 but I've never seen a photo of No. 18 same date.

But the list of trains operating on 4/30/71 in the 1972 Kalmbach book Jounrey to Amtrak, 17/18 was only a Washington-Bristol train by then. The N&W portion was discontinued but Southern continued to operate it Washington-Lynchburg.

Looking at the schedule, I guess they had to - 17 of 4/30 would have run all the way to Bristol so there would have been no equipment in Lynchburg to run Southern’s 18 on 5/1.
